The Birthday Ball by Lois Lowry (Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, 2010) is the story of Princess Patricia Priscilla who is almost sixteen which means she will soon have to choose a husband from the group of horrible suitors chosen by her mother. Patricia, not ready to be married, disguises herself as a peasant named Pat and attends the town school. “Pat,” falls in love with the schoolteacher and wants him to be her husband, but it is against the law for a princess to marry a peasant. Tempted nevertheless, she invites him to the ball and announces that he will be her husband. Everyone is shocked. The suitors are very mad. In the end, Patricia finds a way to marry Rafe, the teacher, and they live a wonderful life together. And the town seems a lot happier. But if she had married one of the suitors, what would her life have been like? And how would the town have ended up? (Megan in grade eight)
